Zooarchaeology (the analyses of animal or faunal remains associated with archaeological sites) is a new and exciting area of teaching and research at Texas A&M University.

The study and analysis of faunal remains associated with archaeological sites is undertaken primarily to help in understanding past people's adaptations to the many environments they have occupied and the lifeways they have followed.

Our Zooarchaeological Laboratory here at Texas A&M is currently involved in several exciting research projects in this field of anthropology. One long term project involves better understanding of people's predatory relationships with various North American ungulates (mammals with hoofs, such as deer, etc.).

Other projects involve the analysis of the animal remains from a late Roman farm site in southern Italy, and the study of human adaptation to the Texas Plains and Gulf coastal environments, particularly the human to animal relationships.

Some of the teaching and research facilities of the Laboratory include an expanding comparative faunal collection, as well as photographic and microscopic equipment for the study of bone and teeth specimens.

Undergraduate and graduate students interested in zooarchaeology and prehistoric human ecology are encouraged to participate in the activities of the laboratory, and have the opportunity of learning the discipline through course work and direct participation in the research activities of the Laboratory.
