A profile of the alluvial sediments
exposed along the Tol River. Four major alluvial groups
comprised of 10 distinct lithostratigraphic facies.
Test excavations
in Square 2 and 3 in the East stratigraphic profile at
the Lenkiteng site (GnJm38).
Test
excavations and geological profiling were undertaken there
in August, 2000. Lithic material is generally referable
to the Later Stone Age. Analysis of soils, sediments and
datable material recovered at Lenkiteng allow a preliminary
correlation of the Later Stone Age occupation at the site
with the later Quaternary alluvial stratigraphic history
of our study area.
Clearing the East
Stratigraphic profile of the Lenkiteng site (GnJm38).
The thick sediments at the top of the profile are
referable age to the Seaku group; those at the base
to the Shordika alluvium.
