The Ph.D. program in anthropology is designed to enable candidates to achieve
advanced, professional competence in particular subfields
of anthropological research. Graduates go on to teach
in colleges and universities or work in major research museums.
Each doctoral candidate's training will emphasize formal
instruction in seminars and independent research conducted
under close supervision by, and in consultation with, faculty
members active in similar areas of research.
After completion of formal coursework as demonstrated through
written and oral preliminary examinations, a doctoral
student will design and conduct and independent research project.
That research project forms the basis for a written
dissertation.
Competitive scholarships, fellowships, and assistantships
are available to outstanding PhD students.
