| Students enrolled within these
programs receive training preparing them for professional
research careers in governmental agencies, museums or private
industry. The department has a well-rounded program in anthropology
with offerings in cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical
anthropology and folklore. The nautical archaeology program
provides specialized training in the survey, recording, excavation,
conservation, and analysis of shipwreck sites. Students should
be able to complete the MA degree in 2 to 3 years (1.5 years
of full time coursework and the balance to write a thesis.
As a rule only limited support in the form of scholarships,
fellowships, and assistantships are available to MA students
since the department diverts most of its available resources
to Ph.D. students. Several other universities in Texas offer
graduate training in anthropology and
museum studies.
