Dr. Waters specializes in geoarchaeology (the application
of the geosciences to archaeological research), Late Quaternary
geology, and PaleoIndian archaeology and in the landscape
setting of prehistoric agricultural communities.
Dr. Waters
- holds a joint appointment with the Department of Geography.
- has been appointed to the Center for the Study of the
First Americans (CSFA) Professorship in Liberal Arts.
Waters received his Ph.D. in geosciences from the University
of Arizona in 1983 and is the associate director of CSFA and
director of the North Star Archaeological Fund.
Waters has served on more than 50 archaeological field projects
in the United States, Yemen, Jamaica and Russia. The National
Science Foundation and the National Geographic Society have
funded his research.
He has authored or co-authored more than 35 journal articles,
10 book chapters, one book (The Principles of Geoarchaeology:
A North American Perspective, 1992), two monographs, and four
geologic maps In 2000, Waters received the Distinguished International
Visiting Scholar award given by the University of Leeds, England,
School of Geography.
