| This large-scale project directed
by Dr. Alston V. Thoms on behalf of the city of San Antonio entailed extensive
excavations at the deeply buried (ca. 50 ft below surface) Richard Beene
site located along the Medina River about 15 miles south of San Antonio.
The final report was issued in 2005. More than 20 occupation levels were identified, including what is probably the largest known Angostura occupation (Late Paleoindian, ca. 9,000-years-old) in North America, and an exceptionally well-preserved, 7,000-year-old Early Archaic occupation. This site clearly represents one of the most important archaeological discoveries in Texas. The project has employed more than 50 individuals, including students and faculty in the Departments of Anthropology and Soil and Crop Sciences at Texas A&M University. Specialists in environmental archaeology from several other universities (e.g., Universities of California, Kansas, Nebraska, and Wisconsin, as well as Southern Methodist University) and research programs (e.g., Beta Analytic, Houston Museum of Natural Science) have participated in the paleoenvironmental reconstruction component of this project.
