Human Ecology of Northwestern North America
Anthropology 689 - 602 |

|
| Course Syllabus |
| Course Description:
This class might be better entitled: " Archaeological Human Ecology of Northwestern North America ." It focuses on use of archaeological and related data to examine aspects of long-term (i.e., evolutionary) human ecology (i.e., the human ecosystem) in the Northern Rocky Mountains of Northwestern North America. Other interior and coastal regions are discussed/compared to the Northern Rockies. An important objective is to examine how hunter-gatherer land use varied and evolved through the millennia in diverse habitats . Student research and analysis of artifacts and other materials from archaeological sites in the middle Kootenai River basin provide data for a class-project case study.
Requirements:
Attend classroom and lab sessions; lead classroom/lab discussions, as assigned; prepare and submit authored/co-authored. These papers will be revised and incorporated into a report on the field schools and related research that will be submitted formally to the Kootenai National Forest as part of the Center's cooperative agreement with the Forest.
Class Grade:
Based on participation in class/lab discussions and on the quality of research papers. |

Structure:
Instructor: Lectures on topics-of-the-day; reviews studies from various areas of Northwestern North Americas, emphasizing regions in Northern Rockies area and Kootenai Valley region ( see following sections for additional information ); comments on, reviews, and edits student writing
Students: Develop and report on assigned research topics that relate material culture and/or environment in the middle Kootenai River Valley to human ecology in Northwestern North America; lead classroom and laboratory discussions as they pertain to the topics-of-the-day and the Kootenai Valley region. Data sets, including artifacts, samples and records, are derived from the Department's 1994 and 1995 Northern Rocky Mountain field school and other studies in the project area. See following/attached pages, assignment tables, etc., for additional information.
