Lauded A&M Professor Dies Bryan-College Station Eagle (12/31/04)

Dr. Bonnichsen was the holder of the Center for the Study of the First Americans Chair in Liberal Arts and focused his career on developing new knowledge about the initial peopling of the Americas.

He led multidisciplinary research projects in Maine, Montana, Nevada and Oregon. These projects and work conducted through the Center have led to the publication of several books and numerous articles relating to the peopling of the Americas including

  • Paleoamerican Origins: Beyond Clovis (published posthumously)
  • Who Were the First Americans?
  • Method and Theory for Investigating the Peopling of the Americas (with Gentry Steele) and
  • Bone Modification (with Marcella Sorg)

Over 44 years, Bonnichsen conducted archaeological investigations in the United States, Canada, South America, Russia and China. He was the author or co-author of 35 refereed journal articles, 31 refereed book chapters, five books, and five edited books. Bonnichsen received his Ph.D. in anthropology from the University of Alberta, Canada in 1974.
